Nullriver give connect360 steaming movie support

posted by Duncan at 1:38 pm on November 19th, 2006

Nullriver have updated their connect360 software (See related post). This is after the latest Xbox360 software upgrade that allowed you to watch streaming movies from your media center (and now Mac, if using the connect360 software). The only caveat seems to be that only WMA or WMA movies are supported so you will need to have the Flip4Mac plugin installed in order for connect360 to find them.

This is a fast turnaround by the Nullriver team and is what I have been waiting for for. That DVD player is becoming more redundant by the day.

Just for Kicks and Infamy

posted by Duncan at 5:11 pm on October 1st, 2005

I went to the Resfest last night and watched the sneaker flick ‘Just for Kicks’ and then the graffiti flick ‘Infamy’. Both were great but it was the former that I was most interested in.

Just for Kicks charts the athletic footwear fetish from sneakers’ early adoption by the style warriors of 1970s New York City to their status today as a de facto apparel of choice for an entire generation. It was full of interviews with the sneaker collectors, the trend setters and even the ‘stick up kids’ who used to wait outside stores in NY ready to rob the shoes from the feet of customers!.

The film is kind of saying that if it wasn’t for hip hop culture and the stars of that scene then the sneaker manufacturers would not be selling as many shoes. Well, this is of course very true now’a'days but I’m not sure if it was that true at the start, at least for me. I’ve been into sneakers for the last 20 years and when I got my first proper pair (some Ellesse tennis shoes) when I was 15 I didn’t know what hip hop was. I bought them because at school casuals were cool and I wanted to be one of them. We bought brands like Ellesse and Diadora, names that now are very commercial but then were sort after. I guess as years went on I did eventually get influenced by the advertising and music (Run DMC, Adidas and Nike, The Jordan range both spring to mind) but that wasn’t till the the late 80′s early 90′s. Back to film though, try and get to see it if you are into trainers in any way, it well worth it.

This is a bit of fun. It’s a little toy someone has built to go along with the Wedding Crashers movie. It allows you to upload an image and then appear in the movie trailer. As you can see from the image below I have another career in the waiting ..The wedding crasher

UPDATE: here’s one my friend Martyn did. It really made me laugh

The life Aquatic

posted by Duncan at 8:52 am on February 28th, 2005

In Wes Anderson’s THE LIFE AQUATIC, a group of oceanic explorers who call themselves Team Zissou embark on a journey to hunt down the “jaguar shark” that ate one of their crew members (Seymour Cassel). Determined to avenge the death of his dear friend, team leader Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) is melancholic about the journey he’s about to make.

I thought the movie was great, Bill Murray is a god. The last Wes Anderson movie I watched was THE ROYAL TENUNBOWNS, and this is along the same strange lines. I just love the fact that there is so much going on in his films away from the focal point of the camera (watch for the electrictionas that never seem to quite fix things). This made me smile all the way through, and that for me is all a movie has to do.

Google Video

It seems google has another trick up it’s sleeves. I had never seen google video(still in beta) before but much like all the other services they provide it does what it says on the tin. Google Video enables you to search a growing archive of televised content. They have been indexing stuff since Dec ’04 and are gradually adding new channels all the time. We’ll wait and see how useful this proves.

Riding Giants

posted by Duncan at 7:58 pm on December 5th, 2004

I watched Riding Giants today, the follow-up from Stacy Peralta. Riding Giants is a documentary film in the same vein as Dogtown and Z-Boys, this time exploring the lives and passions of big-wave surfers from around the globe, though centering primarily on three epochs of big-wave surfing as seen through the eyes of their chief proponents. I really enjoyed the film even though I kind of new I would from just knowing it was being made. Well worth a viewing.
